Panzer I – Germany’s First Mass-Produced Tank
The Panzerkampfwagen I (PzKpfw I), commonly known as Panzer I, was the first mass-produced tank of NS Germany. Though it was originally intended as a training vehicle, it was used extensively in early WWII campaigns due to the lack of more powerful tanks.
Basic Overview
Full name: Panzerkampfwagen I
Type: Light tank
Production period: 1934–1937
Units produced: Around 1,900 units
Crew: 2 (driver and commander/gunner)
Strategic Role
Originally designed as a training tank, not for frontline combat.
Played a crucial role in training crews and testing Germany’s tank doctrines, laying the groundwork for more advanced models like the Panzer III, IV, Panther, and Tiger.
Though underpowered, it was key in early German victories through fast, coordinated Blitzkrieg tactics.
