Panzer I – Germany’s First Mass-Produced Tank

The Panzerkampfwagen I (PzKpfw I), commonly known as Panzer I, was the first mass-produced tank of NS Germany. Though it was originally intended as a training vehicle, it was used extensively in early WWII campaigns due to the lack of more powerful tanks.

Basic Overview

  • Full name: Panzerkampfwagen I

  • Type: Light tank

  • Production period: 1934–1937

  • Units produced: Around 1,900 units

  • Crew: 2 (driver and commander/gunner)

Strategic Role

  • Originally designed as a training tank, not for frontline combat.

  • Played a crucial role in training crews and testing Germany’s tank doctrines, laying the groundwork for more advanced models like the Panzer III, IV, Panther, and Tiger.

  • Though underpowered, it was key in early German victories through fast, coordinated Blitzkrieg tactics.
