The «Nachtigall» Flag
Sizes: 135×90 cm.
The Nachtigall Battalion was a military unit formed during WWII as a collaboration between Germany’s military intelligence (Abwehr) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B). Established in early 1941, the battalion comprised approximately 650 members, including both Ukrainian nationalists and German officers.
Key figures in the battalion included:
Roman Shukhevych: A Ukrainian nationalist who served as a commander within the battalion.
Theodor Oberländer: A German officer who later became a federal minister in West Germany.
The Nachtigall Battalion participated in the German invasion of the Soviet Union, notably entering the city of Lviv in June 1941.
Due to political disagreements—particularly the German refusal to support Ukrainian independence—the battalion was disbanded in August 1941. Many of its members were later integrated into other units, such as the 201st Schutzmannschaft Battalion, which operated in Belarus.
