#deutschepanzerwaffe

The Panzer IV (officially Panzerkampfwagen IV, abbreviated Pz.Kpfw. IV) was a German medium tank and one of the most important and widely produced tanks of WWII. Unlike the Panzer III, which was initially intended for tank-versus-tank combat, the Panzer IV was originally designed as an infantry support tank with a short-barreled 75mm gun. However, as the war progressed, it was continuously upgraded and became the backbone of German armored forces.

From mid-war onward, especially after encountering the Soviet T-34, the Panzer IV was fitted with a long-barreled 75mm KwK 40 gun, making it effective against most Allied tanks. It saw combat on all fronts—from the invasion of Poland and France to the Eastern Front, North Africa, and later the defense of Germany.

It was valued for its balance of firepower, protection, and reliability, and served in many roles, including as a tank destroyer and for anti-infantry support. Its chassis was also used as a base for various other vehicles, such as the StuG IV and the Wirbelwind.

Basic Overview:

  • Crew: 5

  • Armor: Up to 80mm (later models)

  • Armament: 75mm KwK 37 (early) / 75mm KwK 40 (later)

  • Engine: Maybach HL120, ~300 hp

  • Speed: ~40 km/h (road)

The Panzer IV was the only German tank produced throughout the entire war, with over 8,500 units built, making it a cornerstone of Germany’s armored forces.
