The Stahlhelm was a German paramilitary organization founded in 1918 by Franz Seldte. Initially, it was created as an association of WWI veterans who aimed to protect the interests of former frontline soldiers and to promote a nationalist and militaristic agenda.

Facts:

  • Founded: 25 December 1918, in Magdeburg, Germany.

  • Full name: Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten (The Steel Helmet, League of Frontline Soldiers).

  • Purpose: Representing WWI veterans, opposing the Treaty of Versailles, and supporting nationalist political causes.

  • Membership: Peaked at over 500,000 in the late 1920s.

  • Political role: It was aligned with the right-wing and monarchist movements in Weimar Germany, later cooperating with the DNVP (German National People’s Party).

  • Absorption: After the NS rose to power, the Stahlhelm was gradually merged into the SA (Sturmabteilung) during the Gleichschaltung process, and by 1935 it was fully dissolved.

The name Stahlhelm comes from the distinctive steel helmet (M1916) worn by German soldiers during WWI, which became a key symbol of the group.
