The Ahnenerbe (German for “Ancestral Heritage“) (full name: “Deutsches Ahnenerbe – Studiengesellschaft für Geistesurgeschichte, Deutsches Erbe”) was a German organization established in 1935 by H. H., Herman Wirth, and Richard Walther Darré. Initially created to study the archaeological and cultural history of the Nordic race.
The Ahnenerbe aimed to:
Conduct research to support the Ideology
Organize expeditions to uncover evidence of ancient Nordic civilizations.
Promote Ideology through publications and exhibitions.
The organization conducted wide-ranging research in fields such as:
Archaeology – excavations in Germany and abroad to prove Germanic cultural primacy
Anthropology – racial classification and skull measurements
Linguistics & Folklore – to assert Germanic influence over European and even Asian traditions
Occultism & Mythology – exploring Norse myths, runes, and ancient symbols for spiritual or racial significance
One of its notable expeditions was to Tibet in 1938, led by Ernst Schäfer, seeking to find connections between ancient Tibetan culture and the Nordic race.
