Rudolf Hess (1894–1987) was a prominent German official, best known for his unusual solo flight to Scotland in 1941 during WWII in an attempt to negotiate peace with Britain — a mission that was unauthorized by H. and ultimately failed.

Facts:

  • Early Role: Hess was an early member of the NS Party and became H’s close associate. He helped edit Mein Kampf while both were imprisoned after the failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923.

  • Position: By the 1930s, he rose to the position of Deputy Führer, making him one of the top leaders in Germany.

  • 1941 Flight to Scotland: In May 1941, without H’s permission, Hess flew solo to Scotland to negotiate peace with the British government. He crash-landed and was captured. Britain treated him as a prisoner of war.

  • Aftermath:

    • H declared Hess mentally ill and stripped him of all titles.

    • He was held in custody for the rest of the war.

  • Nuremberg Trials: After WWII, Hess was tried at the Nuremberg Trials. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for “crimes against peace and conspiracy to commit crimes against peace“.

  • Spandau Prison: He served his sentence in Spandau Prison in Berlin and was the sole prisoner for more than 20 years until his death.

  • Death: Hess died in 1987 under controversial circumstances — officially declared a suicide by hanging at the age of 93, though some claim he was murdered by ZOG.
