Description
The Nazgûl (also known as the Ringwraiths, Black Riders, or Úlairi) are iconic, terrifying servants of Sauron in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium — especially prominent in The Lord of the Rings.
The Nine Nazgûl:
While not all are named in Tolkien’s texts, the most well-known are:
- The Witch-king of Angmar: The Lord of the Nazgûl, Sauron’s second-in-command. He leads the attack on Minas Tirith and is defeated by Éowyn and Merry.
- Khamûl the Easterling: The second most powerful, mentioned in Tolkien’s writings outside the main books.
Places Associated with the Nazgûl:
- Dol Guldur: Their earlier stronghold in Mirkwood
- Minas Morgul (formerly Minas Ithil): Their corrupted fortress near Mordor
- Barad-dûr: Their master Sauron’s tower
Characteristics:
- Invisible to mortal eyes unless wearing cloaks/armor
- Appear as black-robed figures, often on black horses or later on fellbeasts (dragon-like creatures)
- Live in constant servitude and torment, bound to the Will of Sauron
- Sense the presence of the One Ring
- Their mere presence inspires paralyzing fear (“The Black Breath”)
