Description
The Sverd i fjell monument (“Swords in Rock”) is a famous landmark in Stavanger, Norway.
Meaning and Symbolism:
The monument consists of three giant bronze swords, each about 10 meters (33 feet) tall, planted into the rock by the fjord.
They commemorate the Battle of Hafrsfjord (around 872 AD), where King Harald Fairhair won and united Norway into one kingdom.
The swords symbolize:
Victory – the largest sword, representing Harald.
Unity – the two smaller swords, representing the defeated petty kings.
Peace – because the swords are planted into solid rock, never to be used again.
