Description
The Sverd i fjell monument (“Swords in Rock”) is a famous landmark in Stavanger, Norway.
Meaning and Symbolism:
- The monument consists of three giant bronze swords, each about 10 meters (33 feet) tall, planted into the rock by the fjord.
- They commemorate the Battle of Hafrsfjord (around 872 AD), where King Harald Fairhair won and united Norway into one kingdom.
The swords symbolize:
- Victory – the largest sword, representing Harald.
- Unity – the two smaller swords, representing the defeated petty kings.
- Peace – because the swords are planted into solid rock, never to be used again.
